Chooselife Wales “Mountain Recovery Walk” June 2012-13
Penyfan Mountain in the Brecon Beacons played host to 332 people who were all taking part in the annual “Mountain Recovery Walk” organised by “Chooselife Wales” a Drug and Alcohol intervention service based in Llanelli.
28 organisations from all over Wales took part in this remarkable event including officers from Welsh Government who walked alongside the many people who are currently in “recovery” from substance misuse.
Alan from Chooselife Wales led the 886km walk to the summit of Penyfan Mountain, he spoke words of encouragement to the walkers and spoke of them being a group of people giving strength to each other through their journey, not only during the walk but also during their journey of recovery.
Prior to setting off on their walk the participants were addressed by Cllr Lindy Butler Vice Chair of the Llanelli Rural Council who stated that she had admiration for each and every one of the walkers and wished them luck on their journey to the summit and towards their recovery from substance misuse.
One of the participants a young man aged 23 currently suffering with substance misuse issues arrived at the base of the mountain after the climb stated ” My fight with drugs and alcohol started when I left the army after serving in Iraq and witnessing horrific incidents whilst there, other people told me not to come today because I wasn’t ready for such a massive climb up this mountain, but today has made me more determined to become free of drink and drugs and all the problems it has given me , today to me, is the first day of my recovery journey and I am so glad I came, I did it for not only me but for my mates I lost in Iraq”.
Several more of the participants gave their testimonies of their recovery journeys whilst at the summit which were truly humbling to hear.
From H a young girl with drug and alcohol issues said “It made me feel great when I got to the top and the burgers gave me the strength to run down the mountain”.
A young girl who had taken her 2 year old child with her on the walk said that “I will remember today all of my life and I brought my boy with me because I will complete my recovery for his sake, when he is older I will remind him of this day in years to come”.
D a young man in recovery from drug addiction said “What an excellent day I enjoyed, it was brilliant; the food was brilliant and thank you to all of the Chooselife staff and everyone who went and helped us today”.
Mr Andrews plans for the recovery walk to become bigger and better each year he said “Last year we were about 120 people, look at how many are here this year , it’s a fantastic event that anyone who is passionate about recovery can join in with, its hard on the day but the feeling you get when you’ve taken part and witnessed peoples stories is overwhelming, I would like to thank each and every one of them for coming along and being a part of today, and if anyone is interested in coming along next year they can contact Chooselife Wales in Llanelli for more details”.
Many people believe that addiction to drugs or alcohol is like a terminal illness, which is not true and today has proved that many people go on and recover and live positive and active lives in their communities, they become role models for others who are suffering.
Heroin addiction is plaguing our society as heroin addicts have to fund their heroin habits. The path of addiction start much earlier on in someone’s life. Cigarettes are definitely a gateway drug and normally opens the door to cannabis. I really believe that cannabis is the most deceptive drug that there is. We all know that heroin kills people yet cannabis sends a message that it is an okay drug, well it is not. For most heroin users once the heroin is out of their system they then have to learn recovery techniques to overcome their habitual practises and remain consequence free from the drug. Yet when you give up cannabis the THC in the drug deposits itself in brain cells and you can suffer from flashbacks and panic attacks years later. Cannabis is not a safe drug…Cannabis is not a safe drug… Cannabis is not a safe drug….This video is designed to encourage you whether you live in Wales, England, Ireland , Scotland or anyone of those countries in the “United kingdom” or even mainland Europe. There is no part of the United Kingdom that is unaffected by drugs, from cannabis to heroin. If you are either addicted to or affected by cigarettes, cannabis, barbiturates downers, crack, heroin, opiates, methadone, subutex, methamphetamine, cocaine, meow meow, mephadrone, legal highs, alcohol, ketamine, ghb, solvents, there is life after addiction and it starts today in your journey of recovery. If you have overcome an addiction, please send us a message to encourage other people who are struggling to overcome their addiction……Please contact us and join in our, recovery in community….
