San Leandro: Prototype City of the Future
The story of one of the most diverse cities in the nation, San Leandro, California, where the installation of a gigabit fiber optic network has sparked a chain reaction leading to the city’s transformation into a new center for innovation and technology in the San Francisco Bay Area. Following the direction of the Mayor and City Council and the hiring of America’s third civic Chief Innovation Officer, San Leandro is activating its innovation ecosystem through a unique strategy focused on developing public private partnerships and community engagement. This collaborative approach is attracting significant new investment, transforming a traditional industrial city into a more sustainable, healthy city where people choose to live, work and play. Together with community members, entrepreneurs, business leaders, educators and local youth, San Leandro is propelling itself into the 21st century by prototyping the city of the future.
